IGD recently asked customers which food outlets they would be buying from by 2012 compared to now.

The findings, published in the report 'Shoppers in 2012 - Will your business be ready for them', produced some encouraging results for local foods:

26% of people thought they would be buying more at farmers' markets, twice as many people as those thinking they'd be shopping more at supermarkets. The survey also predicted a 22% growth in online shopping, and 23% growth in those going to specialist stores like butchers and greengrocers, as well as continuing growth for the discounters.

IGD researchers concluded that people are voting for greater choice as to where they shop, and that a quarter of shoppers intend to shop more at farmers’ markets and farm shops by 2012, although this trend is less pronounced among the lowest socio-economic grounds.

It is interesting to note that shoppers' intentions have changed a lot even in the past year - a similar survey conducted in August 2008 predicted much slower growth for the six months following in the specialist and farm sectors - so these new indications are good news!
