40 years of FRA

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Farm Retail Association, a not-for-profit association of the best real farm shops and farmers' markets across the UK.

We invite members past and present to join us to celebrate 40 years of supporting one another, with a celebratory dinner to be held in the town where it all began.

Our history

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Farm Retail Association, a not-for-profit association of the best real farm shops and farmers' markets across the UK.

The FSPA (Farm Shop and PYO Association) began its life on October 11, 1979 at the Farmpick Conference in Birmingham.

In 1994, to reflect the broader range of retail experiences on offer at its members’ farms, it changed its name to The Farm Retail Association. In 2003 it merged with the National Association of Farmers’ Markets to become FARMA (Farmers’ Retail and Markets Association).

More recently, in 2017 the decision was made to rebrand again, with a decision to revert to the simple and concise ‘Farm Retail Association’.

Celebrate with us

Whatever the name, a great many people have benefited from membership. Many of us are farmers who had to learn retailing from scratch and the association has helped to become retailers as well as producers.

Above all, the association has enabled many lasting friendships and local groups to develop. We have shared a drink; shared our flops and flyers; shared our bright ideas and our problems; emulated each other’s successes and tried to avoid each other’s failures. We have a network of friends all over the country where we can call for a chat.

The association is proud and thankful to have always had a passionate team of people championing the families, teams and businesses who grow and sell Great British produce.

As we approach the 40th anniversary, under the helm of Chairman Rob Copley and with new managing agents on board (Yorkshire Agricultural Society), the Farm Retail Association is full of energy and excited to see what the next 40 years hold.

We invite members past and present to join us to celebrate 40 years of supporting one another in this often challenging industry, with a celebratory dinner to be held in the town where it all began. On the evening of Tuesday 12th November 2019, the Farm Retail Association will take over Birmingham's Macdonald Burlington Hotel for an evening of fine dining, reminiscing and forward thinking. If you are a current member or a former member; if you are retired or your business has taken a different course we would love to see you there for a great evening amongst friends.
